Bramhope is mentioned in the Domesday Book when the Saxon thane Uchill had a great manor here. In 1095 this passed into the hands of the famous Percy family, and in 1165 was sold to Ralph de Bramhope. In the 13th century the monasteries owned much of the land and had granges where sheep were grazed. The monks used tracks, such as Scotland Lane and Staircase Lane, as they travelled from their outlying granges to Kirkstall Abbey. At the dissolution of the monasteries Henry VIII gave the land to the Earl of Cumberland. In the 16th century the Dyneley family moved into the area and acquired Bramhope Hall. In 1649 they built the Puritan Chapel, which was taken over by the Church of England after the Restoration.

The tithes, which had belonged to the living in Saxon times, were taken possession of by Ralph de Paganell, one of William the Conqueror's barons, who handed them over to the Abbey of Marmontre, in Touraine, and this church was thenceforth served by the canons of the priory of Holy Trinity, York, which was a cell to that abbey. At the Dissolution these tithes were granted to Sir Leonard Beckwith, and were ultimately bought, in 1556, by Sir William Fairfax, Knight, of Steeton. In this family they remained as private property till they came into the hands of the great Lord Fairfax, who gave them to his domestic chaplain, Thomas Strellon - a non-conforming minister - on condition of his finding "a preaching minister to officiate at Bilbrough." Lord Fairfax, by his will, left these tithes in trust for ever with his family for a preaching minister.

CLINT, in the parish of Ripley, upper-division of Claro, liberty of Knaresborough; 2 miles from Ripley, 7 from Knaresborough, 8 from Ripon. --Pop. 412.

This was anciently the seat of Sir William Beckwith, of Clint, Knight; part of the old house is yet remaining, called Clint-Hall, a very ancient stone building, with an arched portal, situated on a lofty eminence, commanding an extensive prospect. Some remains of the moat, that once surrounded this ancient mansion, are still discernible.

"From Capt. Anthony Beckwith and Grace (Inman), his wife, sprang a race of soldiers, commencing with Lieut.-Col. Beckwith, their grandson, down to their military descendants of the 19th c.; see the pedigree in Foster. It seems that the latter was unaware of their Nidderdale descent, for a commencement is made with the said Lieut.-Colonel; the genealogy of Beckwith, late of Bewerley, compiled by Thos. Beckwith, F.A.S., in the 18th c., clearly shews that Lieut.-Col. Beckwith was the son of John Beckwith, of the par. of Ripon and of Mary (Fairfax), his wife; the said father, of Bewerley, died in a. 1696, and his Will, of the same date, exhibits, ni fallor, the arms of Beckwith. The question arises as to his right to bear these arms John Beckwith, of Bewerley, was the son of Captain Anthony, who was the son of John Beckwith of Kirkby Malzeard. The latter's Will dates a. 1656, and, in it, he names his 'loving friends and coozens, Mr. Matthew Beckwith and Mr. William Beckwith'; these were the sons of Roger Beckwith, and a relationship to the Aldbrough family is apparent. but how the latter was connected with that of Beckwith of Clint I do not know.
