Elizabeth Jennings was the sister of Edmund Jennings, who was Attorney General in 1684,Secretary of State, 1701, President of the Council and acting-governor of Virginia in 1710. A Peter Jennings was her grandfather.

The name is often spelled "Jenings".

Writing for Fredericksburg.com and the Free Lance Star, Ann McDuffie tackles the very full life of James P. Beckwith, a son of Sir Jennings Beckwith, whose family lived in and around Fredericksburg before making their way out west, where adventure, exploration and discovery were a daily fact of life. At some point in his life, Beckwith changed the spelling of his name to include "Beckwourth", which he may have taken to fancy.

I have read several of the volumes written about Beckwourth, and consider him to be one of the most American of our early pioneers. I wish Americans today would live up to the standards he set for himself back then.

Jim Beckwourth, a son of Sir Jennings Beckwith and Catherine Miskell of Virginia, roamed the US in the early 1800s, and contributed greatly to our knowledge and understanding or the geography of the land, the culture of Native-Americans, African-Americans, and others...and was a master of languages and the fine art of spinning a tale. And although many have tried to sully his life's accomplishments and innate abilities, time, and scholarship, is showing that many detracted from him out of racism, jealousy, and political and commercial reasons. Much like they do to this day.

Anyway, this is a wonderful depiction of the great man. I hope you enjoy it. And also wish I had done it! :)

Remnant of historic trail removed from Reno-area land sale: "The remnant of a pioneer trail near Reno that's believed to still bear the marks of California-bound settlers has been removed from Washoe County's surplus auction block.
A stretch of the Jim Beckwourth Trail about the length of three football fields had been included in a 3.3 acre parcel. It includes a 300-yard swale or depression in the soft ground left by wagon trains.
The county bought it as a potential site for a new juvenile detention center, which since has been built elsewhere. County commissioners agreed Tuesday to preserve the land.

A personage who has come to our attention in the writings of Juvenal, who mentions him in connection with resistance to Roman conquest and authority. Geoffrey of Monmouth refers to him as a British king whose brother was killed sometime during Claudius' invasion (43 AD). He has been linked with Caratacus, but more interestingly, he is said by the interpolators of William of Malmesbury's "De Antiquitate Glastoniensis Ecclesiae" to be the king who granted 12 hides of land around Glastonbury to Joseph of Arimathea and his band of followers, when they brought Christianity to Britain for the first time in 63 AD.

Some scholars think that it may have been Arviragus and his people who occupied the ancient hillfort, located in the county of Somerset, known as Cadbury Castle (which would later come to be associated with King Arthur), and used it as a base for their resistance against the Romans.
